MORE drivers are being caught driving under the influence of drugs than alcohol, according to statistics following the latest traffic blitz at Federal on Thursday 21 May.
In what was a joint operation of Noosa, Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi policing units, 475 breath tests were carried out during a major operation on both the north and south bound lanes of the Bruce Highway near Federal from 8pm to 3am on Thursday 21 May.
Of the drivers tested, two were charged with minor drink driving offences, while six were charged with drug-driving.
Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the results weren’t surprising as more officers are trained to test drivers for drug use than ever before.
“As we have more officers trained, I believe we’ll see more drug drivers caught,” he said.
Other offences included one person charged with drug possession, one driver charged with driving an unregistered vehicle and one person charged with driving while unlicensed.
REPEAT OFFENDER
A 20-year-old Noosa man has pleaded guilty to drink driving after being caught driving drunk twice in only four hours.
The man was pulled over by police while driving on Noosa Drive, Noosa Heads, on 1 May and was charged with drink driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.16 per cent.
The man was then pulled over again four hours later and charged with drink driving with a BAC of 0.116 per cent.
The man pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on 19 May to both counts of drink driving, obstructing a police officer and driving while suspended and was fined $3500 and disqualified from driving for four years.
