Having a snake slither around your neck, climbing into the back of a police van or getting into the driver’s seat of a fire truck are not an average day activity at Tewantin State School.
But on Friday about 400 children under eight years old and in Year 6 took a break from the ordinary.
Prep teacher and event organiser Ashley Keune donned his mad hatter outfit for the occasion and enlisted the assistance of Year 6 students, student leaders and parents to supervise various activities as the school celebrated Under 8s day.
“They really stepped up to the plate,” he said of his Year 6 band of helpers.
There was art to create, books to look at, native animals to touch, sports to try out and a jumping castle.
The fun and educational event taught children a bit more about various emergency services, sporting codes and native animals.
