THE year was 1978. One of the foundation members of the Noosa Arts Theatre, Val Warren, enthusiastically suggested the inauguration of a One-Act Playwriting Competition for Sunshine Coast residents, with the three finalist plays to be staged.
By 1983 the One-Act Playwriting Competition became so popular that it became a national event attracting entrants from across Australia and internationally. Now in its 39th year, Noosa Arts Theatre is proud to offer the three finalists for 2016, opening on Friday 1 July.
A Poet Passes written by established author Allan Mackay from New South Wales, offers a poignant journey of discovery as Ann and her daughter Natalie attend the funeral of Ann’s husband, a famous poet they have not seen for 17 years.
In the lead-up to the service on a winter’s morning, Ann and Natalie meet people who solve the mystery surrounding the man who deserted them.
Directed by Fiona Young, A Poet Passes will enthral audiences.
With a pace synomous with the One-Act Play Festival, established playwright Richard Harris presents a fast moving hilarious play Dead Loss.
Meet an ageing ex-rock star Trevor Loss, better known by his stage name – Tor Loss. Determined to secure his economic future, Tor Loss ends up on the wrong side of a drugs gang, having attempted to purloin their high purity cocaine. Under heightened police surveillance, fate intervenes in Tor Loss’s plan, with hilarious results.
Directed by the talented Tania Nash, Dead Loss stars several notable Noosa Arts actors.
Harry’s Bounty features Lexie and Stan, caretakers of Harry’s old factory since it closed over 25 years previously. All is peaceful until two young people arrive at the old factory bearing news which not only surprises but changes all of their lives unexpectedly.
Playwright Pauline Low will have audiences gripped by the twists and turns of Harry’s Bounty.
Offering an $8000 cash prize pool, including the inaugural Nimmo Prize for Best Play, the One-Act Play Festival culminates with the Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award to be presented after the final performance.
