Voices rise for literature

SUNSHINE Beach State School students were given a lesson in the arts, attending the Voices on the Coast Literary Festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) recently.
The excursion was part of the school’s Academic Talent Program with students from years four to six learning about the literary, theatre and illustration world, as well as the USC location and what life is like at university.
The students were also able to represent their school with pride and engage with students from neighbouring schools.
In her report of the event, teacher aide Emily Bates said the program inspires and motivates the students to develop their love of reading and writing.
The students’ first presentation was a talk by award-winning author Greg Dreise who is best known for Silly Birds, Kookoo Kooaburra and Mad Magpie which are stories about teaching morals.
“Gregg, a descendant of the Kamilaroi and Yuwalayaay people, is a storyteller and entertained the students with his music, art and magic storytelling,” Ms Bates said.
Year five student Augie was very impressed and said it was a terrific workshop.
