Surf crowd cleans up

PUT on some gloves and grab a plastic bag – it’s time for the Surfrider Foundation Double Island Clean-up from 7 October.
The award-winning, bi-annual event cleans rubbish and debris from Noosa River to Double Island Point and through to Rainbow Beach with free camping and four-wheel drive access for all volunteers over the weekend.
Event organisers said it’s common to collect more than two tonnes of rubbish and marine debris from the beach and dunes during the clean-up, but the good news is the plastic pollution will be recycled into furniture.
All recycleable rubbish collected is sent for recycling and event organisers record the finding through an international database.
Volunteers can win a share in over $3500 worth of prizes and the traditional owners from Kabi Kabi will join the group for a cultural awareness and community engagement workshop.
To celebrate the group’s efforts there will be a free barbecue and live music by the campfire on the Saturday afternoon.
“It’s a win-win for everyone, but most importantly for our oceans, beaches and all biomass,” event organisers said.
“Everyone is welcome. Bring your family and friends and help us spread the word. Let’s have a great weekend in paradise together and help to keep this magical place clean, now and into the future.”
