Print tips for DIY writers

PEREGIAN Beach bookstore owner Annie Grossman said she has lost count of the number of aspiring authors who have approached her for publishing advice.
“I’d get at least one budding author come into my shop each week wanting information about local printers and editors,” she said.
“They’re often overwhelmed by the task at hand when it comes to turning their dream of publishing into a reality.”
Annie’s bookshop is well-known for stocking local authors but she said it can be difficult when a self-published book “is not up to standard”.
“How can you explain to an author who has poured their heart and soul into a book that their cover is crappy or they’ve chosen the wrong font or the book is the wrong size,” she said.
In an attempt to try and answer some of the big questions surrounding self-publishing, Annie has invited local author and book editor Ange Takats to present a workshop, Self-Publishing 101.
Ange undertook six months of research before self-publishing her 90,000 word travel memoir, The Buffalo Funeral.
“Writing a book is just the beginning of the publishing journey,” she said.
“There are so many things that an author needs to consider before investing their time and money into printing a book.
“The workshop will cover a range of topics from typesetting and font choice to marketing and distribution.”
The workshop will be held at Annie’s Books, 8 Kingfisher Drive, Peregian Beach, on 5 June, from 6 to 8pm.
The cost of the workshop is $60 per person and includes the two-hour tutorial and light refreshments.
Bookings are essential, so phone Annie on 5448 2053 to secure your spot before 30 May.
