Explosive shots from McDonald

By BRUCE BLAKEMORE

TABLE TENNIS

After the third qualifying round the ‘cream’ is beginning to rise to the top of the competition, but these initial rounds are mainly in preparation for finals’ night, apart from the obvious task of making the top six!
A Grader Kye McDonald has forged his way to the number-one spot undefeated in singles, and in the process has displayed some of the most explosive shots we have ever witnessed.
Sitting closely behind are the usual contenders Roger Gore, Bill Brown and last season’s winner Jordan Brown who will remind Kye that victory will not come easily.
In the doubles Bruce Blakemore, with only one loss, is currently is in the number-one position.
B Grader Steve Gardner continues to improve, despite a handicap reduction, to claim the leading spot after three rounds. But watch out for good mate John Murphy who is lurking close behind along with Martyn Clarke who will no doubt be challenging them both as the season unfolds.
The doubles however is a wide open affair with honours shared amongst at least six players so there will be some jostling in the coming weeks.
No surprise to see young Lucas Gore on top of the ladder in C Grade as he can challenge any calibre player with his attacking style. Improvers Sunny Lidden and Matthew Duncan are the obvious contenders to unseat Lucas along with veterans Brad Muller and Steve Campbell. The doubles however has Richard a clear front-runner with his spinning serves and quick counter hitting the perfect combination for any partner. He may be wheelchair bound but take him lightly… at your peril!
Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm with practice session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week and all sessions are held at the Bicentennial Centre Sunshine Beach. Please call 5474 5526 for any further information.
