Hefty fines for wandering dogs

WANDERING off-leash dogs could cost their owners a lot of money in fines and impoundment charges says Noosa Council.
The council warning follows a spike in complaints from local residents about irresponsible dog owners and their uncontrolled dogs, particularly in the Boreen Point and Sunshine Beach street areas.
Unleashed and wandering dogs can be distressing for some residents as well as a threat to local wildlife, which is why council is urging dog owners to exercise responsible pet ownership and make sure their dogs are on leads when off their properties.
Owners who walk their dog off-leash, outside of designated off-leash areas, risk penalties in excess of $220.
Council officers have stepped up patrols, particularly in those areas where complaints have increased significantly in recent weeks.
The cost to owners to retrieve a dog from the pound is also in excess of $200, in addition to a daily charge to cover sustenance and care. Responsible dog owners always ensure their dogs are on a leash when out walking, unless in designated off-leash areas.
Noosa Shire has a number of designated dog off-leash areas which can be found on council’s websitewww.noosa.qld.gov.au under “Interactive Maps”.
Owners of impounded unregistered dogs must register their pet before it can be released from the pound.
