IT’S not the ideal start to a writing career, but the death of a close friend saw Tewantin man Ian Mulville finally put pen to paper to produce his first novel, Full Circle.
“I’ve always had this book in the back of my mind,” Ian said.
“When my good friend, Dave, died of a heart attack at only 49, it was the catalyst. We all think we have time.”
Released on 1 May, Full Circle follows the story of two English lads on the run after a job goes horribly wrong. Throw in an alluring brothel barmaid, a walk along the Camino, plus a relentless detective and Full Circle makes for perfect winter reading that will keep you wanting to know ‘what happens next?’
Full Circle is not only a great read, but also an insight into the author’s life as Ian admits the characters are based on himself and Dave’s adventures when growing up in London.
“Dave and I grew up through our teens and twenties in London,” he said.
“Dave worked for the metro police in the UK and the book follows some of our adventures.
“A lot of the people I’ve met in my life also feature in the book.”
Written over a year, we asked Ian what it felt like to finally see his book published.
“It is such a good feeling,” he said.
“When there was the knock at the door and the first edition was delivered, I was in awe. Here it was.
“It was tactile. I had something to show for my dedication to see through the highs and lows – to see it through to completion.”
Ian said it can be scary putting your work out into the world, especially when the characters are based on both yourself and a dear friend.
“But you have to keep an open mind,” he said.
“I am happy to learn from any criticism given to me. This is a learning experience for me.”
But Ian isn’t taking time out to revel in his accomplishment with another book already in the making.
“My next book is based in the Middle East as I spent a lot of time there working,” he said.
