SLOW Food Noosa will tonight (Thursday) host a fund-raiser to help send one of its youngest members to the We Feed The World festival in Milan this October.
Jennepher Bucher from the award-winning Maleny Cheese has been chosen as one of four people to represent Slow Food Australia at the international event that will bring together thousands of young people from all over the world to discuss the future of food and farming and to think about the future of our food system.
The 27-year-old said she recently joined Slow Food Noosa after being encouraged by her customers at the Noosa Farmers’ Market.
“As a local producer, I am particularly interested in working with farmers, producers and customers to assess the future food needs and how we can meet them together,” she said.
“The Slow Food movement is an international organisation of like-minded people who are all working toward the same goal.
“I am passionate about local, fresh food and would love to help change the food systems we have in place to secure this for the future generations – and I encourage more youth to get involved.”
Jennepher is involved in all aspects of the family-owned businesses – Obi Obi Dairy, Maleny Cheese and The Natural Yoghurt Company.
She has worked closely with dairy farmers including cow, buffalo and at one stage, even a camel milk farmer to source milk to make artisanal cheeses and yoghurt products.Jennepher said she hopes attending We Feed The World would allow her to be part of the global discussion on how we could feed the future planet from our local farmers and producers.
“The opportunity is there to see things on a global scale and to exchange experiences on innovation, traditions and cultural food knowledge and how to apply it here,” she said.
“I hope to link to platforms for education and improvement in our businesses as well as joining a network of global connections to help solve issues here in Australia in the future.”
To assist with Jennepher’s airfares Slow Food Noosa will be holding a Wine and Cheese night at The Base Gallery, underneath Green Cathedral at 27 Rene Street, Noosaville, from 5.30pm tonight.
The cost per person is $20 and will include award-winning cheeses from Maleny Cheese and an exclusive performance by trumpeter and cheesemaker Trevor Hart from Cedar Street Cheeserie.
Guests are asked to bring their own wine and glasses, with cheeses provided.
