Waters clear, and fish aplenty

By JACK MANGROVE

WITH less rainfall and the large tide starting to bring the cleaner water into the river, the Noosa River is looking fantastic. The River Mouth and Woods Bay is where you want to focus your time, with the best baits being prawns and frog-mouthed pilchards.
Large winter bream, trevally and queenfish have all been taking over the last week. Whiting have been thick around Frying Pan and the Dog beach with live nippers and worms claiming their fair share of fish. Surface fishing for whiting can be very successful once you’ve got the action down.
Stick baits and small poppers are the way to go.
The area around Tewantin Ski Run has been fishing well for bream, trevally, flathead and the odd mangrove jack.
Mud crabs have been on the move with the area around Weyba Creek holding some good bucks. Fresh mullet is the key to a good feed.
The offshore scene has been fantastic over the last few weeks with great numbers of pelagic. As we move into the cooler months the pelagics tend to move north, following the warmer water currents. This is when we tend to focus our efforts on reef species. Snapper, sweetlip, tuskies, pearl perch and the odd cobia are all species we will target in the cooler months.
In close, Sunshine reef is one of the favourites for smaller craft, while larger boat will head for Chardon’s, North Reef, Barwon banks and Double Island.
Micro jigs and large soft plastic fished hard to the reef will see the good results, floater rigs with large pillies and yakkas work well, while good local squid and flesh baits will be the mainstays for the bottom bouncers. So as the water temperature drops we look forward to some very tasty reef fish on the menu.
On the beaches: Noosa’s North Shore beaches have been fishing well for the last few weeks for bream, dart and whiting. Fishing the run-in tide is the best with most of the bread and butter species coming right in close to shore. The gutters north of Teewah have been the prime target area with some nice jew taken at night.
