COMPETING at the Little Athletics Queensland state championships for the first time, Noosa athlete Sebastien Hayes, 8, has won a gold medal in the Under 9 Boys 60m hurdles in a time of 10.40 seconds.
Taking part in the championships has been a great introduction to Little Athletics for Sebastien, since joining the local team in September last year.
Sebastien has already won a bronze medal in the Under 9 shotput and a silver medal in the Under 9 discus, with fellow Noosa team-mate Christian Caldwell, at the Queensland State Relay championships in December last year.
Then in March this year he qualified to compete in five events at the Little Athletics Queensland state championships, finishing strongly in the 70m, 100m, high jump and discus, as well as the 60m hurdles in which he won gold.
Sebastien was one of 41 athletes from Little Athletics Noosa who qualified to compete at the state championships. Noosa had the fourth largest team of athletes qualify to attend the championships and ended up claiming a total of 26 medals including 11 gold, seven silver and eight bronze.
Along with the Little Athletics Noosa’s medal haul several personal best times were also achieved, including three Queensland Best Performances – Rianna Dorey, 17, won gold in the Girls’ Under 17 200m (25.50 seconds); Nicholas Hooper, 15, won gold in the Under 16 Boys high jump (1.80 metres); and Luke Giacca, 16, won gold in the Under 17 Boys javelin (63.19 metres).
