Numbers’ up for plate thefts

Numberplate theft is one the rise but Cooroy police have teamed up with Cooroy Rotary Club and the SES to help stop thieves in their tracks.
Cooroy police will turn the screws on crime and will theft-proof driver’s numberplates free of charge on Saturday 18 July.
Cooroy police Sargent Mal Scott said numberplate theft is often the first action thieves take to cover their tracks when committing other crimes.
“However, the one-way screws that we will be providing for free can’t be removed with conventional tools so the more people who take this opportunity, the more difficult it is for thieves,” he said.
“We are very grateful for the support of the Rotary Club and the SES who are assisting us in providing this free service by being on hand to remove your plates and re-secure them with the irremovable screws.”
The Turn the Screws on Crime community initiative will take place at the Cooroy State School parking area on Elm Street, Cooroy, on Saturday 18 July from 9am to 11am.
The changeover will only take a few minutes and no appointment or booking is necessary.
