Update to war tribute

TEWANTIN’S cenotaph stands as a reminder of the sacrifice of men and women throughout past wars and has long been the place to pay respects to soldiers on Anzac Day.
Now, the Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, in partnership with the Tewantin Noosa RSL, is planning an Afghanistan war memorial for Tewantin.
Supported by Noosa councillor Frank Pardon, the memorial will be a community project and named the Mates Memorial Walk – Afghanistan War.
Lions member Michael Roach said the proposed site for the memorial would have to be one of reflection, peace and tranquility, as well as respect for those who have died or continue to be impacted by the war.
“A place where the local community and others can consider the human costs and the determination our forces made to assist the people of Afghanistan,” Mr Roach said.
Tewantin Noosa RSL sub-branch president Steve Drake is calling for input from returned soldiers.
“We want returned service personnel from this war to be involved, to assist with the project, its design, concept and build so that we can capture their experiences, feelings and emotions for inclusion in this Memorial,” he said.
The Tewantin Noosa RSL is asking any returned or serving personnel to contact Mr Drake on 5447 1981 or email armnavair@westnet.com.au to offer input into this community project.
A meeting will be arranged at the proposed site in Tewantin with a briefing session by the end of this month.
