A healthy dose of festivities

WITH the festive season in full swing, Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift has shared her five top tips to enjoying the holiday season, the healthy way.
“There’s nothing worse than seeing the New Year in and realising you’ve added a few kilos with all the Christmas trimmings,” she said.
“It’s important to plan and prepare early to ensure you enjoy the healthiest and happiest festive season possible. Here are my top tips to keep your wellbeing in check.”
Eat, drink and be wary: Stick to recommended alcohol guidelines of no more than two standard drinks per day. Even just one glass of wine contains about 250kj and takes a 20-minute walk to burn off. Why not try refreshing ice tea or a healthy fruit punch instead? Your waistline will thank you for it.
Feast to feel good: Avoiding that second helping, not arriving at an event with an empty stomach and learning to say no will help you to feast to feel good, not full. While sticking to a diet with plenty of fruit, vegies, wholegrains and lean meats will increase your energy levels.
Make a list: Keeping a list of what you need to do will help you to feel in control and prepared throughout the festive season to reduce any Christmas stress.
Love thy neighbour: While Christmas is a joyous time for many families, for others it can be a time of loneliness and sadness. Reach out to those around you and spread some festive cheer.
Give the gift of health: Stuck for gift ideas? Why not choose a healthy alternative such as a wellness book, exercise equipment, or even a massage voucher. This will help your loved ones stay relaxed, happy and healthy throughout the year to come.
