Howzat – Patsy Fayne’s Claim to Fame

“Howzat!” Patsy Fayne’s Claim to Fame

Patsy Fayne or Patsy May as she was then, was the first Australian woman to take a wicket at Lord’s. The year was 1976.

“What did the toffs of Lord’s think about this?” we asked Patsy.

“Not much. Not only did they not want women playing at their sacred ‘gentleman’s’ cricket ground, they were firmly of the opinion that women didn’t even know how to play cricket.”

From 1968 to 1976, Patsy was a member of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team. Her first tour was to Jamaica in1973. She also played against England and New Zealand.

Harassment by the Paparazzi, sex discrimination, intrigue and questionable antics by opposing teams were all par for the course.

Patsy is the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Tewantin Noosa Probus Club to be held at the RSL, Tewantin on Monday June 24th commencing at 9.30 a.m. Visitors welcome.
