Shining a light on diversity

The central message for Harmony Day 2018 is ‘everybody belongs’ and at Sunshine Beach State School World Harmony Day was embraced and celebrated last week with the wearing of orange and a special everybody belongs assembly. The international school has students from Asia and Europe as well as across the coast and hinterland.
Teacher Casey Brown relishes the diversity in her Prep class this year with her students sharing culture and language and students are supported by specialised staff who provide extra lessons.
Martina, a mother of two international students said being at an International School made her children think about the world. “Before we had kids my husband and I travelled a lot and we hope our kids will love to discover other countries as well,” she said. “It’s a door opener for jobs, travelling, making new friends in the future. Visiting an international school makes them open minded and tolerant. They learn that there are many ways to learn something and not just the way they teach in Switzerland is the right and only one. Kids in Switzerland often work under pressure. Here at the Sunshine Beach State School the most important thing seems to be that the kids are happy, self-managed and have fun to learn something new.”
