THERE’S a new gang in town and they’re out to prove girl talk isn’t just about make-up and shoes.
Girl Torque is the only all women’s motorcycle group on the Sunshine Coast and they celebrated their sweet 16th on Sunday 22 May the only way they know how, with a big ride.
Group leader Judy Noakes said the birthday ride attracted a large group of women who rode from Forest Glen to Goombarian in celebration.
Judy, a local who has been riding with the group for 11 years, said Girl Torque had been one hell of a ride.
“Girl Torque was started by Helen Maurovic 16 years ago when she got her licence and realised there weren’t any women groups to ride with, so she started one,” Judy said.
“The shared thread of riding has more often than not morphed into fantastic friendships created with women we wouldn’t have otherwise met.
“We have a very diverse group of some 80 women from all backgrounds and ages ranging from 22 years to 77 years and riding every style of bike. We get more excited for each other when we’ve bought new rubber tyres for our bikes rather than new shoes.”
Girl Torque isn’t just about friendships; the group also hold charity rides to raise much-needed funds for local charities, and men are invited.
This year the Bras ‘n’ Bikes charity ride will be held on Sunday 23 October at the Yandina AFL Ground and is a big event in the biker community.
“Bras ‘n’ Bikes was born 15 years ago and it’s a very colourful event. The men love dressing up in a pink bra,” Judy said.
“Last year we had 510 very generous bikers attend our event, raising $17,500 for Bloomhill.”
