Fast bikes take to footpath

By JONATHON HOWARD

CYCLISTS are being asked to slow down along Gympie Terrace as they dodge and weave between vehicles and pedestrians.
Several residents have written to Noosa Today expressing their disappointment in those cyclists, who continue to use the footpath as a faster alternative to the congested roads.
Gary Norris of Noosa said he has witnessed a collision and a several near misses and he wants Noosa Council to take notice of his concerns and take action against offenders.
“Anyone who regularly walks along Gympie Terrace footpath would have witnessed a collision, a near miss or the failure of some cyclists to give way to foot traffic,” he said.
“Although this is described as a shared pathway it is totally incompatible with the very young and old and I urge council to monitor the use by cyclists.
“Cyclists may feel in danger riding on the roads but there is no excuse along Gympie Terrace where traffic is restricted to 40km per hour, which I may add is slower than some cyclists are travelling on the footpath.”
Noosa Council was asked to address Mr Norris’ concerns and whether council was monitoring bikes along Gympie Terrace, but council declined the comment.
