Ideal for growing

By JOHN GREEN, PRESIDENT NOOSA DISTRICT ORCHID AND FOLIAGE SOCIETY

THE Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society was formed so that orchid enthusiasts could get together and share knowledge on growing their favourite plant. The club is still the same, fostering friendship, sharing growing hints and promoting the conservation of Australian Native Orchids.
The club began with 16 members and has grown to 90 today with about 50 attending the meetings, which are held at the Tinbeerwah Hall the first Saturday of each month, at 1pm for a 1.30pm start.
Orchid cultivation has basically remained the same over time with only a few changes such as plastic pots instead of terracotta.
The Sunshine Coast has an ideal climate for growing a wide range of genera. There are over 30,000 species of orchids worldwide plus millions of hybrids so there are quite a few that can be grown locally. Purchase the right ones and they will thrive. Orchids would have to be the one of the most water-wise plants for your garden.
At the November meeting we will be concentrating on repotting your orchids with hands on demonstrations. If you wish to learn more visitors are welcome to the meetings.
I feel keeping your plants growing in new fresh media is the key to growing healthy plants.
Good growing.
