WITH summer fast approaching, you can expect hot balmy afternoons and perfect early mornings, ideal fishing weather for the recreational angler.
The highly prized mangrove jack, which have already been showing in great numbers, will be a prize worth trying for, with structures, rock bars and deep holes the perfect place to start your hunt. Between the lakes has all of these elements, so will be the place to be over coming weeks.
The river mouth, as well as the Frying Pan, have been producing great numbers of whiting on prawns, yabbies and live worms, along with poppers and surface lures in the 50-70mm range.
Woods Bay has surprisingly still provided anglers with some brilliant tailor in the early mornings, along with the Munna Point and Noosa Sound showing a nice mix of trevally breaking the surface.
Flathead have also been a stand out with good-sized fish taken around the Tewantin stretch and down toward the river mouth.
Offshore the pelagic action is expected to pick up, with good numbers of mackerel, tuna and cobia making early appearances already, a great technique is to troll a spread of lures at different depths, the theory of trolling different depth lures to see what level of water the fish are sitting at.
On the reefs it has been firing with the typical reef dwellers, snapper, sweetlip and pearl perch all hitting the decks. North, Chardon’s and Sunshine Reefs have all been the standouts this week.
Off the beach is the place for a feed of whiting and the occasional bream and tarwhine. Up past the camping grounds on Noosa’s North Shore good gutters have formed and the fish are congregating in these as the tide comes in. Worms and small pilchard baits have been doing most of the damage.
Further up the coast, Rainbow Beach and Double Island are still producing great tailor.
On behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.
